True Blood, the series that I have been stuck on to in the late. Not my usual preference as I don't like shows that startle me (or are very kan cheong). Too young to get a heart attack!
Based on the book series Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris, the story is set in Bon Temps, a small town in Louisiana where vampires and humans co-exist. It revolves around well, Sookie Stackhouse (sounded so Jap, found it weird) a waitress who can hear people's thoughts and Bill Compton, the vampire Sookie falls in love with.
In season 1, a series of murders are occurring and all the victims seem to have had a relation of some sort to vampires - most of them fangbangers. It is yet another love story, almost like Twilight but a definite 18SX restriction. The chemistry between Sookie (Ana Paquin; Rouge from X-Men) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) can make your hair stand. It is just so real. Well, the fact that they are dating in real life must help.
Other characters include Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) who is Sookie's brother and a real man-whore. He sleeps with every vajayjay that crosses his sight. It is the scenes with him that you'll find yourself fastforwarding. Way too graphical, way too pornified. *shudders* But I gotta admit, he is hot. Scenes are a turn off though!
There is also Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) an African-American with an angry nature and thinks that everyone around her is racist. She definitely adds some humour into the show. Lastly, there is Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who owns Merlotte's and is also boss of Sookie. He has also always been known to have a liking towards her and he causes a spur somewhere towards the end of the season (only 12 episodes!) with a hidden talent.
The storyline is fantastic - a suspenseful romance with the right doses of humour, romance and thrill but way too much sex. The actors are A class with Ana Paquin winning the Golden Globe for Best Performing Actress 2009 and the show being nominated for Best Television Series as well.
It is a thrilling series that would be more of the ladies' preference with the intense chemistry between the main casts. If you're not one to watch shows with plenty of profanity and sex, I suggest you skip this one but if you overlook it, you'll find a love story like no other.
Cannot wait for Season 2!
